About the action group

The Before it is Too Late Action Group is a small group of people with both professional experience of adoption intermediary work in the UK, and personal experience of what is now termed ‘Historic Adoption’ – adoption mainly before 1976 when many unmarried women having a baby felt pressured by family and friends, and by society, to conclude placing their babies for adoption was their only option. It was often claimed that would be
‘best for baby’ by all professionals those mothers encountered. Our steering group is made up of some of those women and some of those babies and we share a wish to use our considerable experience of working in adoption support of adults affected by adoption to assist others – before it’s too late.

Thirty years ago, working through NORCAP and NPN, we were the people campaigning for birth relatives to have the right to ask for an intermediary service in the hope of being reunited with a relative who was placed for adoption. We achieved that goal over 20 years ago, but are disappointed that service cut backs and rising costs have made providing the service too expensive or unavailable to many who need it, people who may be well into their 70s or older and who really need to get the service they need ‘Before it’s
too late’.

We have regrouped to bring together people who have the skills, qualifications and experienced necessary to provide intermediary services with individuals who need the service and agencies that have the power, even if not the resources, to provide that service. We are convinced the dedication and commitment of volunteers is the way to ensure this key service is provided ‘Before it’s too late’.
